SUMMER IS A COMING!

With a rainy work week behind us and a long weekend ahead here for those here in the states, I’m looking forward to enjoying the break! You can find me bicycling along the city rivers and into the parks, enjoying new exhibits in the museums, opening up a bottle of Pinot Noir at dinner and a possible impromptu trip to the good ole Jersey Shore to visit with family should the weather clear up.

I know Memorial Day is all about barbecuing and welcoming summer, but don't forget to take a moment or two to think of and thank our troops for what they do and have done. Thank you Dad!

This week on the blog, I shared with you some pictures from my friends rehearsal dinner, new tunes to listen to for summer , a chilled soup to enjoy and so much more.....

Whether you are looking ahead to three days of freedom from your chaotic workweek or a regular break from life, have a beautiful last weekend of May. Summer is just around the corner!

Find time this weekend to be active, to enjoy this season's best at your local farmers market and don't forget to use sun protection. Most importantly, please be safe. Be a Designated Driver to those you love. & enjoy all that life has to offer you this weekend. Until Tuesday!

...Did I mention a a "3 day weekend"??!!

Last week, I was already itching to sport my red, white and blue! Clothes are ready, Corona's are chilled and my avocados are ready to be mashed for a killer guacamole!  Rain and cooler temps are headed our way to NYC but that wont stop me! Here are a few of my must haves for this weekend. (praying for sun and warm tempts)

Memorial Day Must Haves

Not pictured: A pool, beach, lake, river, ocean, hot tub, bath tub, park... just get out and do something!

My Weekend Choice: Central Park & The NJ Shore

Its a weekend I love to play paddle ball  Frisbee and any other outdoor sport in the park, so as long as there is good music pumping in the background....
What are your plans this weekend?

MIND YOUR PEAS &....

For the most part, I normally have a bag of organic frozen peas stored in my freezer. I use them for pasta dishes and soups. They have also come in handy for my gym injuries!

Peas are naturally full of fiber and loaded with antioxidants. A half of cup of peas contains more fiber than one cup of oats. Its a powerhouse vegetable that helps fight cancer, heart disease, bone disease and kidney stones. The are a good  and a good-for-you food!

Here is a healthy pea recipe for the warmer days that are quickly approaching. Enjoy it chilled on a warm day for a low calorie, high fiber, bikini ready meal.

Chilled Minted Pea Soup
Prep Time: 5 minutes

Serves:
4
Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients
2 tbsp. olive oil
5 scallions, chopped
4 cups frozen organic peas
1/4 cup chopped mint leaves
6 cups low sodium vegetable stock
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
Sea salt and black pepper, to taste

Optional Garnish
2 cups cooked shrimp, chopped
4 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt
Minced mint leaves for garnish

Directions

A BETTER WORK DAY

Work is something that we all muddle through at times - Luckily for me, I love my job, team and days at the office. It’s not what I plan on doing forever but its helping me get to the place I want and will be at one day. Hopefully your career enables you to be involved in your passion and if not this is a great post on making your work day better. Happy with your career or not, we can all bring a bit more pleasure into our daily work lives. With that in mind, here some tips that aim at doing just that.

Before your work day begins……
Too often the morning routine is rushed because we want more precious moments of sleep.  Ive been guilty of hitting the snooze button one too many times. The flip side of waking up earlier than necessary is to create a positive start to the day.  For example, give yourself enough time to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea while watching the news or catching up on your favorite blogs (ahem, fitness fits) or head to the gym for a heart pumping workout alongside other early morning roosters. The intent is to choose something that energizes you for the rest of the day.

Bring In the Outside
Plants and Fresh flowers do the trick for me. Bamboo sticks are known to bring good luck, if I could tile the floor with them I would! Regardless of what it is from the outside you bring in, the idea is to bring life into your work area to keep a brighter and happier space.

Fashion Files
The majority of us are at our jobs approximately 250 days out of the year. Why not look your best? Looking your best boosts your self-confidence, relays to those that you are a professional and expect to be taken seriously. Its sets a standard and a right impression for the company you work with. Grooming does the same (wish I could send this post to a few coworkers in my office). Self-confidence increases an optimistic mood for the day and hopefully it will spill over to those around you.

Early bird gets the worm…
Don’t throw your hands up at me yet.  I know I just asked you to wake up earlier, and now I’m asking you to arrive at work earlier, but consider this.  By arriving thirty minutes early, you’re already on the offensive.  This extra time gives you an opportunity to fine tune the itinerary you have set for the day, take a deep breath and eliminates the likelihood of rushing through your day.  Granted, it still might happen, but at least you have given your to-do list a fighting chance.  The bone I will throw you, after all, if you’ve made it this far, you’ve woken up potentially one whole hour earlier than you normally do, leave work on time.  No extra hours tonight.  You’ve earned it!

Create a better atmosphere
If you are in a business where you have your own work space, set the tone.  Play some music.  For me, I play Pandora, set to Cold Play. Whatever will provide a bit more serenity in your day, bring it into your workspace. Clean your space – nothing makes me more anxious than a messy personal space. File, dust and spritz Mrs. Meyer Room Fragrance in your area to keep it smelling clean and fresh.

Have a Plan
In order to feel you have accomplished something during your day, create a to-do list at the beginning during those extra thirty minutes you have allowed yourself.  By looking at a to do list, you allow yourself to have an objective to achieve by the day’s end.  I know the feeling I find when I get to cross something off feels almost as rewarding as completing the task itself. Don’t stress if your to do list rolls over into the next day. Your more productive when you put all your energy into one item and then move onto the next. Don’t multitask if it will diminish the quality of your work. Quality over quantity.

Take a Break
Regardless of the day you’ve had, you will need to give yourself a break. Some may be able to take a break at lunch, but sometimes this turns into business as well.  Try to find some time during your day where you can decompress, take a deep breath and not feel hurried, rushed, pressed or sought after.  One of my colleagues brings a book to work with her every day and instead of conversing with others during her lunch time, simply sits a bit away from everyone and reads her book of pleasure.  Otherwise she is very social and engaging, but we all know to give her some time to unwind.  Whatever works! For me, this is lunch outside in the park by myself with no distractions….

Give Yourself a Reward
Now this reward may be found at work, but most likely it will be found after you have left the office.  It could be in the form of a happy hour, time with a friend, a quick beauty pick-me-up, or time with your feet up when you first arrive at home.  Whatever you choose, let it be something you will look forward to as you are working during the day. I personally love to go home, blast my most recent downloaded tunes ,change into my gym clothes and have a personal dance party before heading out to the gym. Gets me pumped before my workout and re-energizes me for the rest of my day.

These are just a few ideas that hopefully will bring good moments  into your  otherwise hectic work day.  If you're inspired to bring even more into your life, think about creating a Sunday routine that allows your week to flow better.

I hope this Thursday finds your place of business buzzing with better energy and better spirits!

KUDOS TO LEMON VERBENA

I have been enjoying my farmers’ markets in my area and adding new herbs to my meals. I came across P. Allen Smith’s PBS video where he showed viewers how to make a simple lemon verbena infused honey.

To be used in sweetening hot tea, drizzled over Greek yogurt or fresh out of the oven healthy carrot muffins. Watch below...

HEALTH BENEFITS OF LEMON VERBENA

Lemon verbena, a perennial shrub, contains an essential oil that aromatherapists value for its restorative effects. In addition to its aromatherapeutic properties, the plant possesses a wide array of other health benefits.
Uses in Aromatherapy - Its like a "morning when everything seems fresh, new and promising." The cool and refreshing fragrance of lemon verbena increases energy, relieves fatigue and overcomes feelings of disinterest and listlessness. Lemon verbena is an ideal choice for use on dull, overcast days at the office or hot, humid days in mid-summer -- and any other time when the weather and other conditions discourage productivity. In addition to refreshing the body, lemon verbena's essential oil helps sharpen concentration and stimulate brain function.

Nervous System -
If your nerves are getting the best of you or if you can't seem to snap out of a depressive episode, lemon verbena may be the herb for you. Lemon Verbena in tea form combats both depression and the ill effects of stress. To take advantage of these properties, pour 1 cup boiling water over 10 dried lemon verbena leaves, allow to steep for five minutes, strain and drink when the brew has cooled sufficiently. If you desire a touch of sweetness, add a small amount of honey to the tea.

Digestive uses - Lemon Verbena tea is particularly effective in relieving
digestive tract spasms, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

THE DIRT ON CLEAN EATING

Clean eating. It’s a term that’s tagged in tweets, posted on Instagram and Facebook, and seen on TV. Is it a diet? Is it a lifestyle?  What is it? The truth is, it’s a very simple and important concept.

Food that’s clean is food that’s for the most part real food and not filled with things that compromise health, such as artificial flavorings, artificial colorings, sugar substitutes etc.

The shorter the ingredient list, the better. Think of it this way... If it came from a plant, EAT IT. If it was made IN a plant, SKIP IT! No certain food is off-limits so as long as it’s a real food, most if the time in its true natural state. Pure fruits are not unclean foods just because there is sugar found in fruit.  It’s not about banishing any particular type of ingredient or food, think before you eat.  Think of your body as a luxury sports car. Would you fill it up with dirt and grease or would you put the top premium gas in it to fuel it?

Heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes are in almost every household in the country today. Those are lifestyle related conditions. Can you believe that?!  Why choose that?

If this is new to you, try eating one clean meal a day and working it up to all 3 or 5 meals. The benefits are endless and for those trying to shed those stubborn pounds this is your key to success! Clean Eating, try it!

What is it about messy bed hair that's just so alluring?! While my mane is amidst some kind of transition - I'm constantly seeking new ways to style it while keeping it in good condition.

Once the heat and humidity of the summer sneaks its nasty breathe into the streets of NYC, its time to stop blow drying and let mother nature style my hair. Why fight the curls? Its literally impossible.

Bedhead, Beach hair, tousled hair....late and running out the door hair......Call it what you want. Just follow the do it yourself mix and keep your go to product in a spray bottle. Spritz, flip, scrunch, twist and go!

Here are some style inspirations to get you spritzing!
